Key Responsibilities by Level:
Actuarial Analyst II:
• Perform data analysis and actuarial modeling to support pricing, reserving, and trend development.
• Assist in creating rate filings and financial reports for regulators and internal leadership.
• Conduct experience studies, utilization reviews, and cost analysis by line of business.
• Develop and validate data used for decision-making across business units.
• Support forecasting, reserving, and financial planning models.
Assistant Actuary I:
• Lead smaller projects or components of large initiatives (e.g., pricing for a new product line or analyzing Medicare Advantage trends).
• Provide actuarial expertise during financial reviews and contract assessments.
• Assist in model development and refinement for pricing, reserving, or provider performance.
• Present findings to actuarial leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
• Participate in regulatory filings and liaise with internal business teams.
Assistant Actuary II:
• Serve as a subject matter expert in a specialized area (e.g., value-based care, risk adjustment, provider analytics).
• Independently lead actuarial evaluations of vendor contracts and complex trend projections.
• Provide strategic actuarial insights in negotiations and enterprise planning.
• Supervise and mentor junior actuarial analysts or interns.
• Drive innovation in actuarial modeling and cost optimization across the organization.
Qualifications
Required (All Levels):
• Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or related field.
• Strong proficiency in Excel; working knowledge of SQL, SAS, Python, or R is a plus.
• Completion of at least 2 SOA exams for Analyst II; additional exams required for Assistant Actuary levels.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Experience by Role:
• Actuarial Analyst II: 2+ years of actuarial experience; on track for ASA designation.
• Assistant Actuary I: ASA designation (or near completion) with 3–5 years of actuarial experience.
• Assistant Actuary II: ASA or FSA designation; 5+ years of actuarial experience, ideally in health insurance or value-based care.
Hybrid:
Independence has implemented a “Hybrid” model which consists of Associates working in the office 3 days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday) and remotely 2 days a week (Monday & Friday). This role is designated as a role that fits into the “Hybrid” model. While associates may work remotely on our designated remote days, the work must be performed in the Tri-State Area of Delaware, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania
