The Accountant I is an entry-level contributor within the Corporate Accounting team and supports day-to-day accounting activities that help ensure accurate and timely financial results for Independence Health Group and its subsidiaries (IHG). The role assists with general accounting, financial close activities, reporting, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities may include tasks related to general ledger activity, operational accounting processes, and participation in departmental projects depending on team needs. The Accountant I works collaboratively with colleagues across the department, applying a foundational understanding of accounting concepts, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn while developing subject matter expertise within assigned areas.
Specific Duties
- Support monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes by preparing routine journal entries, performing standard account reconciliations, and assisting with variance analysis.
- Assist in preparing financial information, including standard internal reports and supporting schedules used for GAAP or Statutory reporting, as needed.
- Support regulatory filings and compliance activities by preparing standard schedules and documentation.
- Perform general ledger research for assigned accounts, identify routine variances or potential issues, and escalate matters requiring further review.
- Support routine operational accounting activities related to revenue, medical claim cost, administrative expense, intercompany or BlueCard activity, or other business-specific accounting areas depending on assignment.
- Prepare and analyze assigned transactions for accuracy and compliance with company policies and applicable accounting guidance, escalating questions or exceptions as appropriate.
- Assist in preparing audit support and documentation for assigned areas.
- Assist in compiling information and preparing responses to inquiries related to assigned accounts or transactions.
- Assist in maintaining accounting processes, procedures, and internal control documentation for assigned responsibilities.
- Prepare standard schedules, analyses, and reports to support business partners and departmental needs.
- Participate in team initiatives, system updates, and process improvement efforts as appropriate.
- Meet established deadlines while maintaining a strong focus on accuracy, completeness, and quality.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Foundational understanding of accounting concepts and principles.
- Strong attention to detail and developing analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to learn and apply accounting concepts to routine day-to-day tasks with guidance.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Willingness and ability to learn ERP systems, such as PeopleSoft, and other financial data tools.
- Openness to learning and using new technologies, including AI-assisted tools, to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team, manage assigned responsibilities, and meet established deadlines.
- Willingness to ask questions, seek guidance, and escalate issues when appropriate.
- Interest in contributing to process improvement efforts and adopting more efficient ways of working.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
- No prior accounting experience required; relevant internship experience preferred.
Work Arrangement
Independence has implemented a hybrid work model consisting of associates working in the office three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) and remotely two days per week (Monday and Friday). This position is designated as hybrid. While associates may work remotely on designated remote days, work must be performed within the Tri-State Area of Delaware, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania.
